What is a competitive analysis?

Competitive analysis is a systematic approach to identifying, evaluating, and comparing a company's competitors. It aims to understand the competitive landscape of a market to find differentiating advantages and anticipate strategic moves by market players.

Beyond a simple list of competitors, a rigorous competitive analysis examines pricing strategies, value propositions, operational strengths and weaknesses, market shares, innovations, and growth trajectories of each player. It includes both direct competitors (same offering, same target) and indirect competitors (alternative solutions to the same need).

Identify direct and indirect competitors

List companies targeting the same customers with similar offerings (direct competitors) and those addressing the same need differently (indirect competitors). Don't forget potential new entrants.

Collect key data

For each competitor, gather: revenue, headcount, pricing position, value proposition, distribution channels, customer reviews, recent innovations, fundraising, and marketing communication.

Build a benchmarking grid

Create a comparative table on key criteria: price, quality, customer service, geographic coverage, innovation, brand awareness. Score each competitor and identify significant gaps.

Analyze strategic positioning

Place competitors on a perceptual map (2 strategic axes) to visualize areas of strong competition and unexploited market spaces. Identify your differentiating position.

Formulate your competitive advantage
