PESTEL Analysis
Decode the 6 macro-environmental forces shaping your market and anticipate disruptions.
What is a PESTEL analysis?
PESTEL analysis is a strategic framework that examines six categories of macro-environmental factors likely to influence an organization: Political, Economic, Sociocultural, Technological, Ecological, and Legal. Each dimension represents a set of external forces the company does not control but must anticipate.
Derived from the PEST analysis created by Francis Aguilar in 1967, the PESTEL version integrates ecological and legal dimensions that have become essential. This tool is particularly valuable for companies entering a new market, launching an innovative product, or evaluating the risks of a strategic investment.
Unlike SWOT, which focuses on the company itself, PESTEL takes an external perspective. It helps understand the overall context in which the company operates and identify major trends that could create opportunities or threats in the medium and long term.
How to conduct a PESTEL analysis?
Define the geographic and industry context
Specify the country or region, industry sector, and time horizon. A PESTEL for the French e-commerce market will be very different from one for the food industry in Southeast Asia.
Collect factors by dimension
For each letter (P, E, S, T, E, L), identify 3 to 5 major factors. Prioritize official sources (national statistics, industry publications) and recent data. Avoid generalities.
Assess impact and probability
Classify each factor by its potential impact (high, medium, low) and likelihood of occurrence. Focus your strategy on high-impact, high-probability factors.
Identify interdependencies
PESTEL factors interact: a regulatory change (Legal) may be triggered by sociocultural pressure (Social) and have an economic impact (Economic). Map these links for a systemic view.
Formulate strategic implications
Transform each factor into a strategic question: 'What should we do if this factor materializes?' Integrate results into your strategic plan and risk management.
